How To Convert PSX Games To Your PSP

By calsijnm  //  PSX on PSP  //  9 Comments

Your PSP is capable of playing PSX games. But of course we need to convert those old black discs to something we can use on our PSP. Here is how…

To play those lovely psx classics you first need to follow a few steps :

  1. Check if your psx game is copy protected
  2. Convert your psx disc into an ISO file
  3. Convert your ISO into an EBOOT file
  4. Place the EBOOT on your PSP
  5. Play the game with the help of POPSLOADER

If you want to play these classics you must have a custom firmware. I tested everything on CFW 5.00M33-6. If you want to know how to get CFW on your PSP, then follow the step-by-step guide
How To Install CFW 5.50 Gen-A

I hope you know how to handle zip/rar files. Try 7-zip or ZipGenius!

1. Check if your game is copy protected.

  • Download and install GameFreak Database (here).
  • Search your game in the list (Here I'll use the game Grand Theft Auto)

  • No protection? Great! Move to step 2 then.
  • You got a protected game? Then you'll need an extra step after you created an ISO. See the next step how to fix this.

2. Convert your psx disc(s) into an Image file.

  • First of all you need a few things to get you started:
    • A psx game, this means the original disc(s)!
    • Software like Alcohol 120% or ImgBurn. Here I'll use ImgBurn. Because it works and is 100% free!
    • a little patience

Ok, let's go now!

  • Download and install ImgBurn.
  • Please note however that some AntiVirus softwares will give you a 'PECompact' virus warning. This is a false alarm and nothing to worry about, 'PECompact' is merely a compression program.
  • Start ImgBurn and select the CREATE IMAGE FILE FROM DISC

  • Now insert your psx disc and select the folder where you want to save the image of your psx game.

  • Hit the icon to start creating the image.

  • Depending on your DVD drive it takes about 10 minutes to create the image. So grab a beer coffee, you deserve it!
  • When finished ImgBurn created 2 files for us : GTA.bin and GTA.cue

If you have a multidisc game, then repeat these steps for each disc. Make sure you name the files in a way you can't confuse them.

If your game has a copy protection, you'll need to find a patch to your game (try MegaGames). You also need PPFoMatic.

3. Convert the image into an EBOOT file.

There are different ways to make an EBOOT file. Here I'll cover two methods that are most used: IceTea and RS-GUI PopStation v3.00.

METHOD 1 : IceTea

  • Method 1 uses software called IceTea. Download it and run the exe file.
  • Now select your image file (img, iso or bin format) on your hard drive.
  • You'll notice that IceTea fills in the game code itself! VERY handy ;-)
  • Set the compression to the maximum

  • Now give your game a title (this is how it shows in your XMB) and select an output folder to save the EBOOT in.
  • If you want a nice icon and a background on your psp then you can determine these on the Expert tab. It's a small effort with great results! If you're looking for backgrounds and icons, please visit the POPs Database.

  • Go back to the Basic tab and hit Let's Go!
  • IceTea starts to convert our image to an EBOOT!

METHOD 2 : RS-GUI PopStation

  • For this conversion we need RS-GUI PopStationMD v3.00. So download, install and run it! (.NET framework required – see the Microsoft download site)
  • Let's go to SETTINGS >> NUMBER OF CDs

  • If you have a single disc game, select 1. If you have a multidisc game, like Resident Evil, then select 2 discs… blah blah blah
  • You can also select the OUTPUT DIRECTORY you prefer. I advise you to do this. Otherwise you'll get confused.
  • At the bottom of the interface, there's a nice little feature : EXTRAs. So click it. Here you can select icons for your game. It's a small effort with great results! If you're looking for backgrounds and icons, please visit the POPs Database. You can preview what the game will look like on your PSP.

  • Now select the image file ImgBurn created for us (ISO, img, bin format).
  • Choose a correct file name.
  • Enter the game code you find on your disc or on the case.
  • You can also press the button CHOOSE and select your game of the list.
  • Press MAKE and sit back and relax. Maybe time for another beer?

4. Transfer the EBOOT to your PSP.

  • In windows explorer copy the new EBOOT file.
  • Connect your PSP to your computer and go into USB mode.
  • Create a new folder for your game in the .../PSP/GAME folder; like

…/PSP/GAME/GTA. Paste the EBOOT.PBP file in the new GTA folder.

5. Play your psx classic on the PSP.

  • If you already have Popstation installed then select your game by pressing the X button while holding the R shoulder button.
  • Select ORIGINAL FROM FLASH.

  • If these settings don't work, restart your game by pressing X and the R shoulder button again. Go up in the list until you find a setting that is working.
  • Finally! Enjoying your game! (with a beer?)

It is up to the newest update 6.30 (dl by my son and installed).

So is there any way I can play my PSONE games or the EBOOK games?

I downloaded Medal Of Honor, and it says the license is invalid…

I have like 20 PSONE original games i’d love to upload and play.

Is it possible, or no chance because the update…

  • First of all you need custom firmware. This means you need a Magic Memory Stick and a Pandora battery.
